چکیده

Data collected with Polrad swept frequency analyzer during almost 2.5 years of Interball-2 mission are used to investigate the directivity properties of AKR observed in the Northern Hemisphere. In contrast with the previous, mostly statistical studies, single dynamic spectra have been analyzed. Simple modeling of AKR source visibility from the location of the observer makes possible to find approximate locations of remotely observed radiation sources and to model the overall form of the dynamic spectrum with a single set of geometric parameters valid during up to tens of minutes. Cases of filled and partially filled emission cones are found as well as smaller emission cones embedded in the main cone. Anisotropic AKR beams aligned with subcones as thin as 10◦ and sometimes narrower have been detected.

Generation of Auroral Kilometric Radiation in Bounded Source Regions

Owing to the complete and precise wave/particle measurements performed by the Viking and FAST spacecraft in the sources of the terrestrial Auroral Kilometric Radiation, the conditions of generation of this coherent radio emission are now well documented. It has been demonstrated that the production of radio waves occurs in thin laminar regions that exactly correspond to the regions of auroral p...

A Coherent Nonlinear Theory of Auroral Kilometric Radiation, 1. Steady State Model

A theory of auroral kilometric radiation due to the nonlinear interaction between negative energy electromagnetic waves and coherent electrostatic ion cyclotron waves is developed. The theory predicts that such radiation produced must have X mode polarization and must have a frequency that lies in a narrow band between the right-hand cutoff and the Doppler-shifted beam cyclotron frequency for e...

Vertical evolution of auroral acceleration at substorm onset

This study describes the onset process of auroral substorms in connection with the vertical evolution of auroral particle acceleration, on the basis of auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) dynamics. We show that the auroral acceleration process at substorm onset basically consists of two stages: (1) appearance/intensification of a low-altitude acceleration region at 4000–5000 km accompanied by in...

Striated drifting auroral kilometric radiation bursts: Possible stimulation by upward traveling EMIC waves

[1] We investigate waves observed by the Cluster wideband instrument (WBD) during an orbital conjunction with the Polar spacecraft. During this perigee pass, Polar was at the upper extent of the auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) source region in the Southern Hemisphere nightside auroral region. Cluster was located at higher altitude above this region and observed AKR with clear signatures of o...

CMI growth rates for Saturnian kilometric radiation

[1] We calculate growth rates for extraordinary mode Saturnian kilometric radiation generated by the electron cyclotron maser instability using a ring‐type (DGH) electron phase distribution model fitted to measured electron energy dist r ibut ions in Saturn’s auroral acceleration region. The observed distributions are unstable in spatially isolated regions of transverse linear size of order 10 ...
